Stanford University medical researchers conducted a study on the correlation between the use of fertility drugs and ovarian cancer.  Their study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, concludes that the use of the fertility drugs, Pergonal and Serophene, may increase the risk of ovarian cancer by three times.  The lead author of the studies, Professor Alice Whittemore, stated, “Our finding in regard to fertility drugs is by no means certain.  It is based on very small numbers and is really very tenuous.”

FDA Commissioner David Kessler would like the infertility drug manufacturers to disclose the study findings and offer a warning on the drug packages.  He notes, “Even though the epidemiology study is still preliminary, women have a right to know what is known.  We’re not looking to make more of this than there is.”

If you were a manufacturer of one of the drugs, would you voluntarily disclose the study information?

As a drug manufacturer, I would voluntarily release the information because disclosing preliminary trial information is a phase in the correct direction to transparency that is beneficial for the pharmaceutical manufacturing and public. The disclosure can help the person to choose and whether to decide the habit to endure or not (Diergaarde & Kurta, 2014).

There has been a lot of research work done in the last many years, on the study of fertility drugs and the threat of ovarian cancer that these drugs poses. Most of these research work points to the fact that women who are infertile or have never been pregnant, have a higher chance of getting ovarian cancer. Also, women who have taken multiple cycles of fertility drugs, specifically Clomid and Serophene, were also at a high risk of getting ovarian cancer.
There has also been some research work that has concluded that there is no link between fertility drugs and ovarian cancer. Between the periods of 1990 to 2013, a study was done in Cochrane on close to 200,000 women and it was found that there was no link between fertility drugs and ovarian cancer. Even in 2012, there was a study done in the US, wherein a large population was studied and there was no link found between ovarian cancer and fertility drugs.
Either way, all drug manufacturers have a responsibility to the people to reveal their findings on the side effects of their drugs to the people, whether they are good or bad. Besides looking at this from an ethical point of view, it would result in numerous lawsuits and court cases, if at a later stage these drug companies were found to promote these drugs after knowing their side effects. Just like how cigarette packets show warnings in their packets on the harms caused by smoking, these drug manufacturers also should give all the relevant information to the people and let them make informed decisions on whether to buy them or not.
