To prepare for this Project:

·       Review problems 17–24 on pages 416–417 of your text, which show how t tests can be use, why we report the test statistic and the p-value, using your TI-83/84 to calculate the necessary values, minimizing the probability of error, and when statistical significance and practical significance differ.

·       Think about one small data set (about 20 individuals) that you can compare to a proposed mean. For example, you could compare the mean weight of a bag of chocolate chip cookies to the mean weight that the industry claims (usually printed on the package.

·       Clearly outline your null and alternative hypothesis statements.

·       Why is your research question important?

·       Outline how each step of a hypothesis test is used to answer the research question.   Steps include: (1) state the null and alternate hypothesis (use the correct parameter); (2) state the significance level; (3) calculate and report the test statistic and the p-value associated with it (Also, list the actual function you used on your calculator; i.e. Stat-Tests-1:Z-Test); (4) state the decision the evidence suggests; and (5) write the conclusion sentence in terms of the problem posed in the hypotheses.

·       How will a t-test be used to conduct your analysis? How is the outcome from the t-test used to support or not support the claim made?

With these thoughts in mind, complete the following:

–  Describe the research question, and explain its importance.

–  Describe how will you collect the data? Then use this process to collect at least 20 data items.

–  Describe the steps of the hypothesis test process will be used to answer the research question.

– Perform the hypothesis test at a .05 significance level.
Show the following steps:

1.     State the null and alternate hypotheses in words. Indicate which is the claim. Why is it important?

2.     State the significance level and justify why the level selected is appropriate.

3.     Describe the population, how the sample was chosen, how the data was collected.

4.     List the raw data and the summary descriptive statistics with a box-plot.

5.     Perform the test. List the calculator function used, the input, the test statistic and the p-value.

6.     State the decision the test indicates based on the p-value and significance level.

7.     Write the conclusion as an English sentence in terms of the problem stated as the research question.

·       Explain how the results of a t test provide a statistical answer to the research question. Is this proof that your result is true?
