College Athletic Department

Founded in 1935, Krakus University is looking forward to celebrating its centennial, but is currently struggling to keep its doors open so it went co-ed three years ago.  During the last five years the college was all-women’s enrollment averaged around 2,500 students. The first year the school went co-ed enrollment rose to 3,000 women and 1,000 men. The women’s enrollment has stayed around 3,000, while the men’s has increased by about 100 students each year. The goal is to enroll around 5,000 full-time students.

As stated, the school went co-ed three years ago when the day college opened its doors to men. Krakus has accepted men in their graduate program for ten years, but it was a tough sell to make the change at the undergraduate level. Many alumnae and current students were against going co-ed, including a very vocal athletic alumnae group, many of whom were big donors to the institution and athletic department, and have since stopped supporting both.

In addition to the recent acceptance of men, the college has been going through a number of internal changes. Improvements had to be made to the residence halls and athletic facilities to accommodate the male students and the addition of men’s sports.  The athletic director, who reports to the vice-president of development, has worked at the in the athletic department since graduating from Krakus in 1990.  Over the years she has served as the women’s volleyball coach, sports information director, and assistant athletic director. She was promoted to athletic director two years ago.

The athletic department is an NCAA Division III member with plans to apply for Division II membership. They currently sponsor eight women’s sports and four men’s sports, with plans to add a fifth men’s sport next year. The full-time staff consists of the athletic director, assistant athletic director/head women’s coach, sports information director, and four head coaches (one women’s and three men’s).  The women’s coaches are upset that the men’s sports have gotten full-time coaches so quickly, when the majority of the women’s teams still have part-time coaches.

The president was hired six months ago, and feels the athletic department is the key to making this a successful transition for Krakus, and ensuring the centennial celebration happens.
