RESPONSE 1

This week we are talking about virtualization which lets you create a virtual version of either hardware or storage systems. 

There are some distinct advantages to virtualization they are; it’s cheaper- all you have to do is download the software and you are ready to go. It doesn’t take up a large space to make sure you can run the program. The costs are pretty predictable because you are paying for it monthly. It reduces the workload because these providers will automatically update their software so you don’t need a technician to come out and do that for you. Businesses are all about saving money so its provides energy savings, they don’t have to pay big bucks to keep the data center cool. 

With advantages come disadvantages they are; it has some limitations meaning it’s not always going to work in all cases because of its virtual. There is a security risk and you are very likely to have a security breach. “The chances of experiencing a data breach while using virtualization? 1 in 4” (Gaille, 2019). There’s an availability issue- what if the third-party software decides to not work. Since they control it you would be out of luck. You lost control in several links because when you have many links needed to perform an action compared if you had full control. You have to make sure you have online storage and that your wifi and stuff is working. Lastly, it takes some time because you have to create extra steps to get the desired outcome.

This week we are talking about the advantages and disadvantages of virtualization. The largest advantage, in my opinion is the fact that through virtual machines, nearly every operating system and application is available for a “test drive”. However, on the opposite end of the spectrum, the virtual “test drive” can often be limited when it is compared to the full versions features. Another glaring issue with many virtual machines is the fact that all components must work in unison, which is simply not the case quite often. To save a file on most virtual machines, that don’t have a file transfer application, you need your network to stay fully connected while you attempt to save the file to a removable media, such as a flash drive. The upside to this is since the virtual machine is not actually connected to your machine, it provides a virtual playground to test various tools or programs such as malware; You could take it a step further and find a specific virtual machine similar to the one you plan to attack and carry out the full attack on the target system without putting yourself at risk. A few other downsides are the fact that the virtual machine(s) may require some extra space allocated within a network, this could cause system sprawl which is the exact opposite of decreasing the systems attack surface. Another draw back from virtualization is that some virtual machine’s files may not be accessible to the entire organization which is direct conflict with the CIA triad. A few more advantages of virtualization are is that it is cost effective as opposed to having to purchase the physical machines and software. Along the same lines, virtualization saves work time because the virtual machines are up to date on their patches since they are services rendered from a company.
