  1. 1.       Focus on the voir dire process, or jury selection. You will examine the manner in which individuals are selected to be jury members either for grand jury proceedings or for a criminal trial. You will also discuss jurors’ qualifications as well as challenges for cause and preemptory challenges.
  2. Discuss what happens after the jury has returned a verdict. The discussion will cover motions for a new trial, motions in arrest of judgment, as well as the appeal process.
  3. Focuses on whether therapeutic reduction is really nothing more than an excuse to abdicate responsibility for one’s actions. Examples include poverty as a reason for gang involvement, drug addiction as a hereditary affliction, and double standards applied in today’s society.
  4. The media dubbed the trial of O.J. Simpson as the “trial of the century.” In your view, was the trial sensationalized because of race alone? Was race employed as a means for media ratings and to stir controversy? How much did genuinely slipshod police work contribute to the controversy and sensationalism?
  5. The state in which you live currently has legislation requiring that all juries consist of 12 individuals and that the verdict be unanimous. In response to recent high-profile case that resulted in a verdict of not guilty, two proposals have been introduced into the legislature to amend how juries will operate. The first is a proposal to eliminate the need for a unanimous verdict so that a majority of 9 of the 12 jurors is all that is needed for a verdict of guilty, or not guilty, in criminal cases. A second proposal has been introduced that would change the number of jurors from 12 to 6 in all criminal cases but would keep the requirement that the verdict be unanimous. Discuss your reaction to these proposed amendments. What are the pros and cons of each proposal and would these proposals be constitutional?
  6. What types of questions would you ask police applicants during the interview phase to determine if they possessed racist or bigoted ideologies?
  7. Religious Beliefs:

a.       Should police officers who are pro-life be forced to provide security for pro-choice demonstrators if it clashes with their religious beliefs?

b.       Should they be excused from such duty, or assigned to different duty that would not conflict with their beliefs?
