Formative And Summative Assessments

At your field experience site, observe at least one lesson taught by a certified grade 1-8 teacher. Look for examples of formative assessment techniques and strategies used during the lesson. Make note of the questions that the teacher asks during the lesson. Note student behavior and body language before, during, and after the teacher asks questions. Ask your mentor teacher to provide you with examples of summative assessments used within the classroom that you are observing. Discuss with your mentor teacher the considerations and criteria utilized to create summative assessments. Use this field experience to gather ideas for a summative assessment that you will create. Based on what you have learned from your observations, address the following questions in a 250-500 word reflection. Describe some of formative assessment techniques or strategies that your mentor used during the lesson. What types of questions did the teacher ask during the lesson? How did the students respond to the questions? What types of things are taken into account when creating summative assessments? GCU format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

Some of the formative assessment techniques and strategies used during the lesson include concept maps, discussions, analogies and open-ended questions. The teacher also uses a three minute pause where the students are required to teach a seat mate. Before the teacher asks questions the students are relaxed and keenly listening to the instructions. However, when the teacher asks a question, some of the students are busying themselves pretending to be looking at the textbooks. Others have their heads buried down to avoid eye contact with the teacher. Some even when the teacher asks them to answer by show of raised hands have their hands raised halfway or inclined such that the teacher is unable to determine whether they are raising or not. When the question is assigned to a particular student all those who had avoided teacher eye contact now gaze at the student assigned to answer. They now show confidence since they have not been called upon to answer.

When it comes to assessments, summative assessments are used to show what students have learned. They are used at the end of a lesson or unit of study and provide evidence of what students have learned. One example of summative assessment used within the classroom that am observing is to ask the students to create an analogy between something they are familiar with and the new information they have learned. Another example is asking them to brainstorm some of the concepts they have learned. This enables them to highlight the different concepts they have learned. Some of the considerations and criteria utilized to create summative assessments as noted by my mentor teacher, is repeating what the teacher has taught in class and what the students have captured or understood.

Next H/W $20 Part 1: Summative Assessment

Create a formal summative assessment to be used within the lesson that you began in Topic 1. Think about ways to assess a learning activity that aligns with your reading standard and learning objective. Provide clear instructions for your students to complete this summative assessment. Include an answer key or rubric with your assessment. Part 2: Rationale In a 250-500 word rationale, describe the alignment between your informational text, reading informational standard, and your learning objective. Address the following questions for your rationale: What knowledge and skills are you trying to measure? Does your assessment effectively measure what you are looking for? Why did you choose this type of assessment? How is this assessment appropriate for the students in the “Class Profile”? Submit your assessment, answer key or rubric, and rationale to your instructor for feedback
