Influence of the Family on Child Success

M1:Assignment 2Influence of the Family on Child SuccessThe influence of the family can significantly shape the overall development of the child. One area where this influence can have a strong impact is on the child’s academic achievement. According toDavis-Kean (2005), the efforts that family members put at home in terms of reinforcing the value of school and stressing the importance of academic achievement can ultimately lead to improved performance of the child and success in school. In addition, the availability of family support, the absence of violence in the home and positive family role models can empower the child to show great commitment to schoolwork and thereby succeed in his/her academic endeavors. Schmitt & Kleine (2010) also acknowledge that sustained efforts by parents or other family members in attending school meetings and events can help in monitoring the progress of the child, thereby increasing the chances of success.Nevertheless, the influence of the family in guaranteeing success of the child can significantly change depending on various factors such as the social economic status of the child. For instance, if the child comes from a low-income family, he/she is more likely to receive less social support, as the parents spend more time looking for a stable source of income (Schmitt & Kleine, 2010). Therefore, such children have a higher probability of registering poor academic results or dropping out of school. This stands in stark contrast to children from an affluent family who are in a better position to receive the required social support and resources that can enable them to succeed at school. In order to increase the child’s success in this changed situation, I would intervene by advising the parents or caregivers to enroll the child in social support programs such as Head Start. This program provides comprehensive childhood education, nutrition, parental involvement and health services to children from low socioeconomic status (SES) and their families. Schmitt & Kleine (2010) assert that the resources and services offered by such programs help in promoting stable family relationships, establishing an environment for developing strong cognitive skills and enhancing the child’s emotional as well as physical well-being. All these are critical for the success of the child in the school.ReferencesDavis-Kean, P. E. (2005).
