The following requirements apply to this essay:1. This essay has a specific audience whom you must convince of the efficacy of yourargumentative claims: a policy commission board who will weigh the value of yourpoints. In the introductory paragraph of your essay, address them as the recipients of yourproposal plan. Consider your audience throughout your essay, and remember that youmust convince them to your point of view.2. The essay needs to have a manageable thesis statement on the state of higher education, and your solution, at the end of your introductory paragraph. Refer to your thesisthroughout your essay.3. This essay is a formal policy-oriented essay, not a personal narrative. I don’t want youusing too many personal anecdotes or examples from your college career. Hence, limitthe amount of personal examples/anecdotes/stories from your college experience orsomeone you know one single time in the entire essay.4. Each body paragraph needs to have at least one directly-quoted source included within it,which will subsequently be paraphrased and integrated into your larger argument. (Oneletter grade off if not followed)5. The essay should have at least six reputable outside sources incorporated, though you’rewelcome to use more. At least one of the outside sources must be a journal (JSTOR)article (Steck, Tight, “Plato’s Academy” article, etc.) that we’ve used over the course ofthe semester. Three of the outside sources must be from the books we’ve used thissemester, College, Liberal Arts at the Brink, and Searching for Utopia. All six of thesesources should be from the in-class readings, though you’re welcome to use oneadditional outside source not covered in class. Directly quote from all of these sources.6. Conclusion paragraph: For Delbanco consider what he means by a “democraticeducation” and what the moral/ethical imperatives are for the modern college graduate, according to College: What It Was, Is, and Should Be. You may want to consider what hementions, and the examples he uses, at the end of his final chapter, particularly what hemeans by “posterity… preserv[ing] and protect[ing] this institution” and why he believes“democracy depends” on a well-preserved collegiate experience (177). Also, integrateinto this discussion a larger discussion of the ethical responsibilities of being a collegegraduate, using the following quotation. Manuel Velazquez defines ethics thusly: “ethicsrefers to well-founded standards of right and wrong that prescribe what humans ought todo, usually in terms of rights, obligations, benefits to society, fairness, or specific virtues”(Santa Clara University). Put this democratic education-ethics section in your conclusionparagraph. (One full letter grade off if not incorporated)Source: Velazquez, Manuel. “What is Ethics?’ Makkula Center for Applied Ethics, SantaClara University. 2010. https://www.scu.edu/ethics/practicing/decision/whatisethics.htmlWeb. Accessed 11 April 20147. Try to have at least one new idea, that is, something we haven’t read this semester, thatcould save higher education. I’d like to see that you’re thinking critically and creativelyabout solving the challenges facing higher education.8. The essay, excluding bibliography, should be about 9-11 pages long.9. A “Proposal/Bibliography” document, complete with the tentative sources you’ll beusing, is due on eLearn by Friday, 24 April at midnight. Provide the full bibliography forall of your sources here. For this proposal, at the very least list three-to-four key points ofyour argument; if you’d prefer, put these points in paragraph form, with examples, or along thesis, with examples. I will provide credit (5% of total course grade) and feedbackpromptly based upon your proposal ideas and bibliography. After receiving feedback, youmay begin your final project.
