Hello Dr. Smith and Class,
Yan Ping is a foreign exchange student who is from China. Yan Ping is studying in the United States for the past few months. While pursuing her studies she made a career that was not custom of her culture. Her parent plans were for her to study business , Yan Ping was interested in history, which was not her parents choice. Yan Ping is supposed to return home to China in approximately three weeks. She is afraid to return not knowing how her parent will feel about her wanting to study history. Yan Ping does not want to disappoint her parent however she is passionate about history. The social phenomenon present is the choice that Yan Ping has chosen a field of study that is considered a low social class status according to her parents. Also another cultural issue Yan Ping is not obeying the wishes of her parents who wants her to study business. To help Yan Ping work through her issues a strategic plan must be implemented to express her concerns with her parents. the ethical behavior of the social worker is apparent , and the conversation being that she offers Yan Ping, someone, to talk with one more accustomed to her cultural issues and beliefs. In addition the social worker also makes sure that it is kept confidentiality between Yan Ping and the social worker unless she is a threat to herself or other. Then other actions must take place.

Hello Professor and class,
The presented problem in this case is what caused Yan Ping to seek out professional help. In this case Yan Ping consulted Kim the social worker to express how she is struggling with telling her parents she have a change at heart in her studies. Yan Ping interest is in Western studies whereas, her parents want her to study business. The issue is not so much that Yan Ping want to broaden her horizons in something that’s dear to her heart but the fact that in Chinese culture loyalty and honesty in the family is very important. Yan Ping know it will upset her parents if she tells them she is not interested in studying business. Therefore, she felt it was imperative to seek outside professional help and this is where Kim comes in (social worker).
The identified problem allows the social worker to listen to Yan Ping and identify and agree on major concerns and how to address them. Identifying external systems, factors that contribute to the problem, who is involved in the problem, and their role in the problem. In this case it would be Yan Ping, her parents, and social influences (friends). The social worker realized from listening to Yan Ping that her problem at hand is not only causing her a lot of stress but a lack of sleep and disengaged in her schoolwork.
Social phenomena stated in this case is Yan Ping being surrounded by social influences (friends) that is struggling with the same hardships as she due to their cultural upbringing. Obeying their parents and struggling to express how each individual feel is not so easy in their culture. This is because most do not want to disappoint them. In the Chinese culture it is imperative in most regions that family is expected to consult family elders on big decisions. However, in this case and and with other young adults in the culture it is not easy to consult when it’s something that will effect the family’s dynamic.
Cultural issues introduced was that the social worker addressed early on that she is aware that Kim speaks Mandarin and she is not experienced in the language. She let Yan Ping know that if she does not understand her, do not be afraid to let her know and to repeat it so communication is clear between the two. There is also the fact that in Yan Ping’s culture family is very important and honesty. Disobeying them is not an option so she’s looking to Kim for guidance and solutions to possibly better address the situation that can be beneficial.
I believe that systems theory would be best solution in Yan Ping’s case. Systems theory in social work is based on the idea that behavior is influenced by a variety of factors that work together as a system (

, 2022). This can include family, friends, and social settings, economic class, and the environment at home. In which fits Yan Ping’s situation. The solution would be to take a structural approach. Observing the interactive patterns in a family or system, finding problem-solving solutions to interrupt them when they are happening. Then get the individual or family to act in different ways tat lead to better outcomes (socialworklicensemap.com, 2022).
