Now, let’s examine the Diels-Alder mechanism for this particular reaction. I have a more general overview if you want to review what the Diels-Alder reaction is.
DIELS-ALDER MECHANISM
It is a concerted cyclization reaction which generates an adduct of the starting diene (furan) and dienophile (maleic anhydride) that contains two new ##”C”-“C”## bonds.
The decomposition of this compound at its melting point of approximately ##114^@ “C”## simply gives you the original reactants back in a retro Diels-Alder. That’s why the reference I showed you said to get the melting point before recrystallization.
WAIT A MINUTE…
If you have done the lab before where you reacted cyclopentadiene with maleic anhydride, you might wonder, “wait… wasn’t the endo product the major product?”
It was. When I did GAUSSIAN calculations for this, I got the ##DeltaG^‡## (Gibbs’ free energy for the transition states) for the endo and exo products were ##”68.25 kJ/mol”## and ##”73.52 kJ/mol”##, respectively.
Also, my experimental endo/exo ratio (via integrations on a ##””^1 “H”## ##”NMR”##: ##8.55## for endo vs. ##1## for exo) was about ##89.53:11.47## ##”endo:exo”##.
So indeed, the endo product for cyclopentadiene + maleic anhydride was kinetically favored (and thermodynamically disfavored) at room temperature.
BUT THIS REACTION…?
But for THIS reaction, of furan with maleic anhydride, as it turns out, the thermodynamic favorability experimentally trumps the kinetic favorability.
The exo product is more thermodynamically stable by about ##”1.9 kcal/mol”## (##”7.95 kJ/mol”##), whereas the endo product is more kinetically stable by about ##”3.8 kcal/mol”##. However, given that the reaction is reversible, the thermodynamic product eventually remains.
So, the exo product is still the major product. Its thermodynamic stability is actually a smaller difference than the energy barrier to ethane ##”C”-“C”## bond rotation, yet still significant!
